Oral Exercises: Primary Math Lessons 7-9

Taking a break from the chalkboard/whiteboard to do some LIVE-action work.

In the Primary Math book, in a brief section called “Oral Exercises,” Lessons VII, VIII and IX have the student working with manipulative objects to perform some adding and subtracting exercises — with some multiplication mixed in just to make things interesting.

Ray’s suggests using marbles, pebbles, beans, corn, etc., to work with.  I chose cherries.

Doing addition, subtraction and multiplication using live objects like this goes a long way towards helping to fix in the mind the basic concepts behind these operations.

And, in this case, you can eat your manipulatives when you’re done!

  1. What screencasting software, microphone, and camera do you use, and whiteboard program? It looks and sounds great.

    • The screencast/whiteboard software I use is Doceri for iPad. The microphone is an AudioTechnica lapel mic. For these oral exercises, I used an iPhone with the built-in mic. Very low-budget!
